Perennial favorites Dan Miller and Lew Del Gatto have joined forces with Marty Morell this year to present “The Music of Art Blakey.” Trumpeter Dan Miller made his name touring and recording with the likes of Harry Connick Jr. and Wynton Marsalis. Saxophonist Lew Del Gatto cut his teeth playing with the SNL band from 1975 – 2005. Marty Morell was the percussionist for the Bill Evans Trio for seven years, and is currently a member of The Jazz Professors (each member of the group is on the faculty at the University of Central Florida). These three musicians are dpart of a tremendous group of musicians who have put together an evening of hard swinging jazz from the repertoire of legendary drummer and bandleader Art Blakey.
Blakey co-founded the “Jazz Messengers” - a seminal group in the both “hard bop” jazz genre of the 50’s and 60’s, and the “neotraditionalist” genre of the 70’s and 80’s. A large part of what made Blakey and the Jazz Messengers successful for over three decades was Blakey’s desire to continue working with like-minded young artists. Some of the “Messenger Alumni” who later went on to become stars in their own right are: Lee Morgan, Freddy Hubbard, Chuck Mangione, Mulgrew Miller, and both Wynton and Branford Marsalis.
